Social engagement groups are the cornerstone of Kwest4Learning. They have grown from one group in 2013 to 4 groups in 2017 – two groups in Brisbane on Friday evenings and two groups on the Gold Coast on Thursday evening.
The group format has developed organically it’s based on the needs of the participants at that time. The result is we now have two social engagement groups running in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast. Participants range in age from 14 years to late 20’s. The biggest impact has been on the sense of self worth for members who participate. Friendships have also formed and social skills have developed and strengthened as a result of participating. The groups offer the kind of emotional support that enables an interest in further education and employment.
Two years ago Simon saw the value Kathleen provided to the participants. Simon joined the group with the vision of increasing the accessibility of the social engagement groups to other people on the high end of the Autism Spectrum. Simon created structure and a business model that saw two social group expand in to four and the start of a pilot fitness group for the participants. They are now looking to expand further into the outer southern suburbs of Brisbane and north to the Sunshine coast.
As a dedicated team, Kathleen and Simon’s vision is to provide a holistic approach to learning and personal development for people on the high end of the Autism Spectrum. Social engagement sessions lead these people out of isolation and into a supportive group environment that assists in the social development and confidence within themselves.
From this cornerstone Kathleen and Simon envisage providing further positive growth through fitness and healthy living opportunities, education services tailored to their learning style and job opportunities to create lives of self worth. They plan to do this through services in education and training as well as social opportunities.
